Selby MP resigns immediately; triggers by-election

Selby MP joins Boris Johnson and Nadine Dorries in quitting, as the fallout over enquiry into Johnson's behaviour continues.

Nigel Adams is to stand down as MP for Selby and Ainsty 'with immediate effect', he has announced.

Adams, who had previously declared his intention to stand down at the next General Election, unexpectedly announced his expedited departure earlier this afternoon, triggering a by-election as he did.

The move adds Adams' name to the list with former Prime Minister Boris Johnson and Nadine Dorries, who also announced their immediate resignation in the preceding 24 hours.

Adams had been expected to take a seat in the House of Lords, having been widely tipped to receive a peerage in Boris Johnson's resignation honours list. No sitting MP was named for a peerage, however, when the list was published on Friday.

Announcing his departure from the Commons, he said:

Yesterday, Selby Conservatives selected an excellent new parliamentary candidate.

I’ve today informed the chief whip that I will be standing down as a Member of Parliament with immediate effect.

It has been an honour to represent the area where I was raised, educated & I want to thank my constituents for their wonderful support since 2010.

Mr. Adams took office 2010, having been selected to run in the newly created 'Selby and Ainsty' seat's first run-out in that year's general election.
