A man whose arrest led to the evacuation of a Selby apartment building is due to appear in court later today.

The 60-year-old local man at the centre of the incident faces charges concerning allegations of racial or religiously aggravated harassment.

He was detained by police at around 2:55pm of Friday afternoon. A search of the man's flat in Cockret Court was carried out later in the day.

An evacuation of the building was carried out after police found what they believed to be 'hazardous materials'.

The materials would be later deemed non-threatening, but not before residents had been forced to spend the night in a temporary shelter.
