Six candidates set to do battle over Selby Westminster seat
Candidates list announced as nomination deadline passes.
Selby & Ainsty Parliamentary Election
Six candidates will be vying to take Selby's seat at Westminster in May's General Election, it has been announced.
The finalised candidates list for Selby & Ainsty has been released after the deadline for formal nominations passed at 4 o'clock yesterday afternoon.
Sitting MP, Nigel Adams (Con), will face five contenders looking to erode the Tory's 12,265-strong majority from 2010. Labour's Dr. Mark Hayes has already been seen campaigning across the area, having received the nomination from his party in July last year.
Nicola Turner is set to fight the election on behalf of the Liberal Democrats. Meanwhile, Colin Heath will be standing on a ticket from the UK Independence Party (UKIP).
Two new parties standing in Selby & Ainsty this time round are the Green Party and the Trade Unions and Socialist Coalition, or TUSC for short. Their candidates are Ian Richards and Ian Wilson respectively.
Voters in Selby will get the chance to have their say and hear the views of the area's election hopefuls at a Selby hustings event on Friday, April 17th, to be held at Selby Abbey from 7 pm.
The candidates are:
| Party | Candidate | |
|---|---|---|
| Conservative | Nigel Adams | |
| Labour | Dr. Mark Hayes | |
| Liberal Democrat | Nicola Turner | |
| UKIP | Colin Heath | |
| Green Party | Ian Richards | |
| TUSC | Ian Wilson | |
Polling will take place on May 7 between 7 am and 10 pm.
Residents who are not already registered to vote are encouraged to do so by contacting Selby District Council or visiting www.gov.uk/register-to-vote. All voters must be registered by April 20th.
NB - An earlier draft of this article included a typo over the date of the hustings event at Selby Abbey. This has now been amended to correctly show April 17th as the date. — The Editor.
