Town centre pub banned from selling food over poor hygiene

The New Inn on Gowthorpe was made the subject of a Hygiene Prohibition Order by Magistrates after environmental health officers from Selby District Council found there was no hot water in the kitchen and that surfaces were 'difficult to clean'. The pub is now unable to to operate any food business to prevent the public from future risk.

Environmental health officers visited the pub over complaints of overflowing bins and the storage of a large number of waste bags in an alleyway. They subsequently made inspections of the kitchens where they found hygiene arrangements to be inadequate and requested that landlord Stephen Dyson made changes.

The issues were were not resolved however and the premises were given a 'zero' rating under the national food hygiene safety scheme.

A series of noise regulation breaches were also considered by the court following a string of complaints against the venue by local residents.

Noise levels at the New Inn were shown to have put the Gowthorpe boozer in breach of the terms of its licence, for which Mr Dyson was duly found guilty.

Appearing before the court yesterday afternoon the publican pleaded guilty to a total of 15 offences. He was fined a total of £17,500 and ordered to pay victim surcharges amounting to £120 and prosecution costs of £3,135. 

Enforcement Officer Tim Grogan commented, "This prosecution clearly demonstrates that Selby District Council will take all necessary enforcement action where people who supply food to the public are found to be blameworthy and breaches of legislation are considered detrimental to people's health."

The Council say environmental health officers have since been working with Mr Dyson to ensure food hygiene regulations are properly complied with at the premises.
