Selby Hockey Club signs up to make new leisure centre its home

The club will be amongst the first of Selby's sporting clubs to make use of the Scott Road centre's new all-weather pitches when the eagerly awaited facility opens come March.

Other sports will be able to play on the £317,000 pitch too and it is already available for booking by teams and members of the public.

The pitch is a 18mm sand-dressed synthetic pitch that has been built to standards required by England Hockey. It can also be used for a wide variety of other sports such as recreational football and rugby. Operators, WLCT, would also like to see the pitches used as a venue for multi-sports camps and Back to Sport sessions such as netball.

Ange O’Mahoney, from Selby Hockey Club, commented, “The pitch is a fantastic resource for the district and offers us a significant opportunity to grow hockey numbers in the club. News that Selby Hockey has signed up to the new facility will be great news for district leisure bosses as they try to entice key groups back to the centre from the alternative accommodation they found after 2013's fire.

The new 'Selby Leisure Centre' is scheduled to throw open its doors during March. The new leisure centre will provide fitness and swimming facilities forthe area including a larger gym, multi-purpose activity hall, sauna and two swimming pools.

Deputy leader of the Council, Cllr Gillian Ivey, commented, “It’s great to see different groups of users coming together to put the leisure centre at the heart of their community.

“The pitch is complete and looks amazing, other work is on track and in a very few weeks now the entire complex will be open and available for use.”

General Manager Paul Hirst said: “The new pitch will give people in the community involved in a wide range of team sports another fantastic opportunity to keep active and healthy, and we’re delighted to be able to support the local hockey clubs as part of this provision.”
