Selby businesses to get help on making the most of the TdY in Selby
Businesses in the Selby area are to get help in making the most of this spring's Tour de Yorkshire race when it comes to town.

Preparations are well under way for the cyclists to be given a huge send off as Selby hosts the start of the race's second stage.
On the evening of Tuesday 17 March Selby District Council is hosting a special free event designed to help businesses make the most of the race. This includes a unique opportunity to hear from the head of the York-based Bishopthorpe Road Traders’ Association, Johnny Hayes, who will talk about the experience of traders during last year’s Tour de France; the aim being to support Selby’s town centre traders to consider opportunities to use the race to boost trade.
Stage two of the race will start outside Selby Abbey on Saturday 2 May. Although on a smaller scale to last year’s Tour de France, the organisers expect a range of high profile teams to take part and significant numbers of spectators on the route. During stage two the riders will head from Selby to Beverley before turning northwards towards Norton and finishing the stage in York.

There will also be a chance to hear more about the race and issues such as branding from Welcome to Yorkshire, alongside details of a festival of cycling planned to take place in Selby during the race weekend.
Leader of Selby District Council, Cllr Mark Crane, said, “We were really keen to work with Welcome to Yorkshire to give our businesses a chance to find out more about the race and, importantly, what opportunities come from this.
“We lobbied for the race to come to Selby because it’s such a great opportunity to showcase the area to both visitors and people who already live here. I’m sure our business community will make the most of this chance to really highlight what’s on offer in our area.”
Gary Verity, chief executive of Welcome to Yorkshire, added, “We saw a huge appetite for all things Yorkshire last year when we hosted the Grand Départ of the Tour de France, and this new race will bring back some of the world’s best teams. This means spectators from far and wide and the most fantastic advert our county can wish for – global television coverage. The event will help businesses prepare in the run up to the event, race days themselves and of course long in to the future as we establish Yorkshire as Europe’s number one cycling destination”.
