Police probe 'violent disturbance' at troubled Selby boozer

Police are investigating a potential assault after a further act of violence inside a troubled town centre pub.

Officers were called to JT Mellanby's on Finkle Street just before 1:30 in the early hours of Monday morning where three men were reported to have been involved in what they have described as a 'violent disturbance'.

The men had already left the town centre pub by the time officers arrived and, as of yet, nobody has come forward to report any injuries.

Enquiries remain ongoing to establish the full circumstances surrounding the disturbance and to find out who was involved.

JT Mellanby's has experienced a somewhat chequered history of late and has only recently been able to claim back its licence after it was revoked in April of last year. Licensors at Selby District Council initially pulled the plug on the embattled Finkle Street boozer citing occurrences of violent behaviour.

Despite being branded 'unsafe' by members of the area's licencing committee, the pub was eventually allowed to resume pulling pints after the revocation was overturned in court. The presiding judge found that the council had breached the licencee's human rights by failing to handle the case correctly. A sum of £23,000 was awarded towards the licencee's costs in bringing the case to appeal.
