Fines for man caught fly-tipping in Selby area

A man will have to pay £2,160 after he was successfully prosecuted for fly-tipping in the Selby area.

23-year-old Ryan David Cummings, whose last known address was in Gainsborough, pleaded guilty in a hearing at Leeds Magistrates' Court yesterday. The offence dates back to an incident on or around December 4th, 2014 when a large amount of household waste was illegally dumped at a parking area off Butt Field Lane in Hensall.

He was given a fine of £1,300, ordered to pay costs of £680 and must also pay surcharges of £180.

The case was prosecuted by Selby District Council as part of its 'zero tolerance' approach to illegal dumping. They were keen to stress that fly-tipping is a criminal offence and carries large penalties to those who are caught, including:

• Prosecution at Magistrates Court - Fine £50,000 and/or 6 months in prison
• Prosecution at Crown Court - Unlimited fine and/or 5 years in prison
• Forfeiture of vehicle used for fly-tipping
• £300 Fixed Penalty fine for failing to produce Waste Transfer Notes
• £300 Fixed Penalty fine for failing to produce Waste Carriers Registration Certificate
• £2,500 for dropping litter
