Welcome to Yorkshire tie-up boost to Selby's tourism ambitions

Selby Town Council have announced they will join 'Welcome to Yorkshire' in a bid to help boost tourism to the town.

By joining the county's highly successful tourism agency, the council hopes its membership can help Selby better promote itself to the 216 million visitors who come to Yorkshire every year.

The proposal to join Welcome to Yorkshire was adopted at a meeting at Selby Town Hall on Monday night. Selby's mayor, Cllr Shaw-Wright told us,

"Selby is on the right track and the Council needs to keep the momentum going and joined Welcome to Yorkshire is the first step, the second step will be the hosting of a Selby Town tourism event in conjunction with Welcome to Yorkshire that will be held at the Town Hall in the near future."

Tourism to the Selby area has been growing steadily since its Abbey centerpiece was became the venue for the wedding of Taiwanese pop superstar Jay Chou and model Hannah Quinlivan in 2014.

Countywide, the tourism industry is estimated to be worth upto £7bn each year, supporting over 250,000 jobs.
