Old Toll Bridge shut as car hits 7-year-old boy near school

The incident happened at around 3:20pm on Monday, close to the road's busy pedestrian crossing. It occurred just as children were leaving the nearby Barlby Bridge Primary School.

A boy was injured during the collision and was taken to hospital by road ambulance. His condition was described as 'serious' by North Yorkshire Police.

No further details about his condition are known at this time.

Officers from the force are currently examining the scene and have been seen taking photographs of what appears to be a small light-coloured car and a Citroen minivan. A number of officers have also been conducting house-to-house enquiries amongst nearby homes.

Barlby Road is currently blocked between Ousegate and George Street with access to and from town over the Old Toll Bridge possible only for pedestrians. Police have advised motorists to avoid the area until further notice.
