Worker 'overcome by fumes' in Selby chemical plant incident

A worker at a chemicals plant in Selby has been taken to hospital after becoming overcome by fumes.

Police and fire services attended the incident at Industrial Chemicals Group site on Canal View, arriving at around 10:15 pm on Saturday evening.

A precautionary cordon was established around the site but was later stood down once it had been determined that no chemical leak had taken place.

A spokesperson for North Yorkshire Fire Service said, "Our crews assisted Paramedics on scene and carried out wet decontamination to the casualty and dry decontamination to 4 further members of staff.

"It is believed the cause was due to insufficient personal protection equipment being used rather than an actual chemical leak."

The matter has now been passed to the Health and Safety Executive.
