Selby Childrens University pupils get ready for 'graduation day'

Selby Community Primary School attained the new new status as part of a new project that aims to raise children’s self-esteem, aspirations and achievements.

Participating children from across the area will be presented with their certificates at a meeting of the Central Area Community Engagement Forum, due to take place at Selby Community Centre on December 3rd.

Cllr Steve Shaw-Wright Chair of the CEF said the Children’s University is a first for Selby – I believe it’s the only one of its kind in North Yorkshire - I am looking forward to learning about the opportunities for Selby’s young people being made available by this innovative approach.

Anna Chamberlain, Selby Children's University Manager, added "At the heart of its work is the ambition to raise aspirations [...], boost achievement and foster a love of learning, so that young people can make the most of their abilities and interests, regardless of the background into which they were born."

Although open to all, the Children's University scheme aims particularly to reach children and young people facing socio-economic and educational disadvantage through the targeting of grants to, and the promotion of activities in, areas of deprivation.

Currently children in four schools are involved in the scheme Selby Community Primary, Barwic Parade, Longman's Hill and Barlby Bridge.
