MP challenged Prime Minister to do everything he can to save Britain's energy sector from excessive tax.

Selby's MP has used an appearance at today's Prime Ministers Questions to challenge a budget decision that he says has damaged viability of the area's energy sector.

Nigel Adams MP, whose Selby constituency contains power stations at both Drax and the troubled Eggborough plant, asked the Prime Minister to meet with him to 'find a way forward' that would give security to the energy industry and its employees in the Selby area. 

Warning David Cameron that the country would be sleep waling into energy capacity issues in the near future, he urged the PM do everything he could to ensure the viability of the country's remaining suppliers.

Mr. Adams (Con, Selby & Ainsty) told the Prime Minister, "The reality is that the power companies are being taxed out of existence."

The intervention came as the owners of Drax Power Station launch a legal challenge against government tax schemes which it says are a 'disincentive to renewable energy'.

In his rebuttal, the Prime Minister told Mr. Adams that when replacing coal with renewables, "we need to make sure this is affordable. We have to make sure that this is affordable."
