No bonfire at Selby Guy Fawkes celebration thanks to striking firefighters
There will be no bonfire at this year’s municipal Guy Fawkes celebrations as a result of a nationwide fire-fighters strike.

Fire-fighters are due to stage a four-day walk-out from 6pm tonight in response to pension reforms that have been branded as theft by the Fire Brigades Union. The strike has been timed to coincide with what is traditionally one of the most busiest times of the year as bonfires and firework displays commence across the nation.
But whilst the traditional Guy and bonfire will be absent from this year’s festivities, the Town Council has reassured Selebians that the annual fireworks display will take place as planned on Saturday night.
Commenting on the absent fire, a Town Hall spokesperson said, “Due to circumstances beyond our control and to ensure public safety for the event we have decided not to have a Bonfire.
“We apologise to everyone about this and understand it is disappointing but the safety of the public at the event is our paramount concern”.
The event will take place on Scott Road field from 6pm tomorrow evening with fireworks illuminating the night’s sky at 7:00 and 7:30pm. Minster FM’s roadshow will be in attendance alongside a selection of rides and hot food stands.
In the interest of public safety, Selby Town Council has asked that those wishing to attend keep their dogs, sparklers and bicycles at home.
