Selby primary school becomes 'Children's University'

Selby Community Primary School, on Flaxley Road, has attained its new status as part of a new project that aims to raise children’s self-esteem, aspirations and achievements.

Children attending will be able to take part in exciting and innovative learning activities outside normal school hours both in school and in the community. By collecting stamps in a passport, children can graduate as Children’s University undergraduates, or even as Masters or PhD students – complete with cap and gown at a special ceremony.

Although the Children's university is based at Selby Community Primary, schools in the area are invited to become part of this exciting new project.  Ian Clennan, Headteacher commented that: ‘This is an excellent opportunity for local schools, clubs and businesses to work in partnership to improve the lives of our children in our part of North Yorkshire.’ 

Nigel Adams, MP “I am very much looking forward to visiting and learning more about the proposed Selby Children’s University.  We are seeing improvement in local education alongside increased funding and anything that can help improve the prospects for our young people can only be a good thing.”

Anna Chamberlain, Leader for Inclusion at Selby Community Primary School is now able to validate local organisations allowing community groups and businesses to get involved. ‘This is a fantastic opportunity for local groups and businesses to get involved in such a worthwhile project.  The success of the Selby Children’s University depends on the local community and we would ask anyone who may be able to assist to get involved.’ To find out more Local businesses and groups are invited to attend a launch meeting on the 19th September at 9:30 at Selby Community Primary.
