Council leader praises district flood response

The Leader of Selby District Council has praised the actions of those who helped residents affected by flooding this Christmas.

Cllr Mark Crane has expressed his thanks to members of organisations including the emergency services, Environment Agency, council staff as well as community volunteers who played a key role in helping to keep as many homes dry as possible as river levels rose.

Around 100 homes and businesses were affected when rivers and water courses across the district rose to near-record levels. Many more were successfully protected by flood defences and frantic work to shore-up defences with sandbags.

Cllr Crane explained, “This has been a real team effort involving the emergency services, the army, search and rescue teams, the Environment Agency and many others.  All working together to help protect homes and give people the information and support they needed to help them keep safe. 

“Selby District Council staff worked around the clock, starting on Boxing Day, to support the emergency response and now as part of the relief work.  I want to put on record my thanks for their support and hard work.

“Particular thanks must also go to the people who have helped neighbours in their own local community: across the district we’re seen people coming together to support each other in these challenging times.”
