Warning to car owners following weekend spate of vandalism and theft

Police are warning motorists in to be vigilant after a spate of theft and damage at the weekend.

A total of fourteen vehicles were targeted across three locations, prompting police to urge residents to report any suspicious behaviour.

The first incident took place between 11pm and 1am, late on Friday evening. Five cars parked in a car park near Selby Railway Station were damaged by having their windows smashed.

One further car, parked in the car park in Selby Park, was also found to have been damaged. In this case, the front passenger window had been put through.

A third incident happened 1½ miles away in a car park off Brayton's Baffam Lane. This incident occurred between midnight and 8.25am on Sunday. 

Eight vehicles had their windows smashed and items including cash, phones and CDs were stolen. 

Police patrols have been increased in the area, and vehicle owners are being urged to report any suspicious activity and take extra precautions when parking their vehicles.

Owners are being advised to always leave vehicles locked and alarmed if possible, and consider fitting a tracking device. They should be parked in a garage or secure area, or in a well-lit open space. Keys should never be left in the ignition, in the same place where the vehicle is kept, or near the front door of your home. In particular, be wary of anyone taking an interest in your vehicle, or behaving suspiciously near parked vehicles.
