Councillor: Selfish salt bin misuse puts others at risk
As the cold spell continues residents across the county are being reminded of the importance of using grit from roadside bins responsibly.

North Yorkshire County Council places salt bins to enable residents to apply grit to roads and footways as temperatures plummet. NYCC says it places the bins where road may have an incline, severe bend or depending on whether the road is already a priority gritting route.
NYCC has now issued a reminder that the grit from these bins is not for use on private roads or driveways.
"Grit bins serve an important purpose by enabling people to help themselves and their neighbours to travel in greater safety," said County Councillor Gareth Dadd, executive member for highways. "However, we do receive reports of people taking large amounts of grit from these bins for private use. This can put drivers and pedestrians at risk if the grit is then not there when needed in severe conditions.
"We urge people to use grit bins responsibly. If the grit is used indiscriminately or on private property, we may remove bins. People can buy rock salt for use on their own property from most DIY stores and garden centres."
People are reminded that when using grit from a bin, it should be used sparingly and needs moisture and traffic flow to enable it to break down ice. It will not work in extremely low temperatures and should not be used in rain, as it is likely to be washed away.
The bins are filled before November 1st every year and can often be topped-up throughout the winter including when there has been significant snowfall.
The county council supports communities that want to enhance local gritting operations through its community partnerships scheme. Parish councils can also buy extra bins if they wish.
