NYCC sets out plans to raise share of council tax

Leading county councillors will meet next week to vote on proposals that would see its share of annual council tax bills rise by 3.99%.

Member's of North Yorkshire County Council's executive committee are set to discuss the plan for a 1.99% increase on general council tax, plus an additional 2% social care precept.

The council says its current financial strategy is based on similar rises of 3.99% in each year leading to 2020. It says this will help it to prioritise frontline services.

The government has given councils the chance to front-load this year and next by increasing the social care precept by 3% in each of the next two years. NYCC however, says it is looking to raise the social care precept by 2% in each of the next three years to balance the need for funding of critical services, including adult social care, with affordability for the local taxpayer.

NYCC's Leader, Cllr. Carl Les said, "We are aware of the pressure on people’s finances. Many families are already struggling to make ends meet and we feel we cannot add significantly to their burden."
