Bypass partially re-opened as Wishingwell Roundabout work complete

Work on the Wishing Well roundabout was completed at the weekend and has now reopened as part of the reconstruction of the A63 Selby bypass.

The contractor has now moved to the A19 Brayton roundabout as work continues on the reconstruction of the section of the bypass between and including the two roundabouts. The whole scheme remains on schedule for completion in early September.

Work on the Wishing Well roundabout took longer than expected because of poor weather followed by the discovery of soft spots in the original foundations that required additional work. In light of this, extra site investigation work has been carried out at the Brayton roundabout to minimise the risk of similar issues at that site. The contractor is aiming to complete work on the Brayton roundabout by the end of August, and work is progressing well on the stretch of the bypass between the roundabouts.

County Councillor Don Mackenzie, North Yorkshire’s Executive Member for Highways, said: “I’m sure drivers will be happy to see the completed Wishing Well roundabout reopened. This gives an indication of the progress being made on the bypass. I can reassure residents and visitors that despite the unforeseen issues at the Wishing Well roundabout, the scheme remains on schedule.

“The contractor has pressed ahead with work on the main stretch of road between the roundabouts, so overall the project is on time for completion as planned, though work is dependent on good weather.

“This investment will give Selby a bypass that is fit for purpose and recognises the town’s importance as a commercial and residential centre.”

The contractor is continuing to schedule day and night working to keep the project on track.
