Great Heck recycling plant hit by overnight blaze

Spontaneous combustion is thought to be behind a fire that broke out in a Great Heck recycling plant in the early hours of this morning.

Fire crews from Selby and Snaith were called to the blaze after the alarm was raised at around 1:30 am today. On arrival firefighters found some 500 tonnes of shredded recycling material well alight.

The fire was extinguished by daybreak using two hose reel jets. A crew from Selby will revisit the site later today to ensure all hotspots have been properly extinguished.
