MP welcomes fall in district unemployment rate
Selby’s MP has welcomed the release of new figures which show unemployment in the area is continuing to fall.

Published by the Office for National Statistics, today’s figures show the number of people out of work and claiming Jobseekers’ Allowance has almost halved since 2010. Some 914 Selebians are currently in receipt of the allowance, a figure which represents 1.8% of the constituency's population.
During the last month alone almost 100 of the area’s unemployed have ceased claiming benefit, a possible sign that the UK's slow recovery is beginning to extend its reach into the north of England.
Conservative MP for Selby and Ainsty, Nigel Adams, has welcomed the latest drop in unemployment claiming it is evidence that his Tory-lead government’s long term economic plan is working the people of Selby.
He said, “My priority when standing at the last election was to help get our area back to work because thirteen years of Labour in Selby saw unemployment rise between 1997 and 2010. These new figures are fantastic news for our local area.
“..By sticking to our long term economic plan to get our country back on track; confidence is returning, companies are hiring; and since the last election nearly 800 more households in Selby now have a breadwinner bringing home a pay packet to help secure their families future.”
