Council and dogs charity team up to tackle dog muck problem

Selby Council is teaming up with the Dogs Trust to host four community events to promote responsible dog ownership this July.

The events will take place in Riccall, Sherburn in Elmet and Tadcaster with the primary aim of reducing dog fouling in the area.

The Dogs Trust will also be visiting local primary schools with the council's dog warden in a bid to take the message to youngsters.

Denise Kelly, North of England Campaigns Manager from Dogs Trust said, “We’re delighted to be working with Selby District Council to provide these community events. By working in partnership to carry out events we can provide a free, easily accessible service to local dog owners and we aim to promote all aspects of responsible dog ownership including picking up after your dog – and the penalties for failing to do so.”

The events will offer a free dog health check including nail clipping, free poo bags, free on the spot microchipping and a free check your chip service.

Dogs Trust will also have information about:

• The change in the law regarding compulsory microchipping
• The legal requirement of keeping the microchip owner information up to date
• The legal requirement for collar and tag
• The legal requirement to pick up after your dog
• The importance of proper training/socialisation to prevent anti-social behaviour
• How to be safe around dogs

They will also provide health and wellbeing advice including promoting the importance of:

• Neutering
• Maintaining a healthy weight
• Recognising signs of ill health
• Registering with a vet
• Regular flea/worm treatment
• Annual vaccinations
• Regular dental checks

The events will run from 11am to 3pm at these dates and locations:

Wednesday 5 July Rosemary House, Tadcaster
Wednesday 12 July Regen Centre, Riccall
Wednesday 19 July Eversley Centre, Sherburn
