Man dies in collision on A64 near Tadcaster

The tragedy unfolded at around 3:25pm as the car, carrying three persons, came into collision as it travelled eastbound on the A64.

It is not believed that any other vehicles were involved in the incident in which the blue Renault Clio left the road, overturned before coming rest in a ditch.

One of the car's passengers, a 22 year-old man from Scarborough, suffered fatal injuries during the collision and was pronounced dead at the scene. Two other occupants escaped the crash with only minor injuries.

The driver, a 24 year-old man also from Scarborough, was taken to York Hospital for treatment. One further passenger was treated meanwhile at Leeds General Infirmary.

The road was closed for more than five hours whilst specialist officers to examined the scene. It was reopened at around 8.40pm.

Police are appealing for anyone who may have witnessed the incident to contact them as enquiries continue.
