Bridge work delays mean longer wait for bypass to fully re-open

The re-opening of the troubled Selby Bypass has been further delayed as work continues on one of the road's bridge sections.

Contractors working for North Yorkshire County Council say their work to the section where the A63 crosses the Selby Canal and a close by railway line is taking longer than originally planned for. They now plan to have the road fully operational by Sunday, September 18th.

The news comes as resurfacing has been completed on both the A1041 Wishing Well roundabout and the A19 Brayton roundabout. Both junctions are now operating normally, with temporary traffic lights removed.

Cllr Don Mackenzie (Con, NYCC Harrogate Saltergate) is County Hall's man in charge of highways. He said, “It is disappointing that the opening has been delayed, and we apologise for the further inconvenience to road users.

“Our contractor has worked additional hours, including overnight and at weekends, to ensure this job is done as quickly as possible, despite initial delays caused by poor weather. I’m sure that the improvements to this section of the bypass will be welcomed by residents, businesses and visitors, as the first phase was last year.

“This is a major reconstruction scheme that continues the commitment made by North Yorkshire County Council to ensure that Selby has a bypass fit for purpose that recognises the town’s importance as a commercial and residential centre.”
