Arsonists blamed over mushroom farm blaze

A fire that tore through a derelict former mushroom farm at the weekend is believed to have been started by arsonists.

Around 20 firefighters battled the blaze which erupted from an abandoned building at the former Middlebrook site near Thorpe Willoughby.

The alarm was raised at around 8:15 on Saturday evening as smoke was seen belching into the skies for miles around.

Four crews were brought in to tackle the blaze, with appliances sent from in Selby, Pontefract and Garforth. Most had left the site by midnight.

The fire is the latest in a line of incidents at the former mushroom farm. A fire at the site in September was allowed to burn for days after tonnes of illegally dumped rubbish caught fire.
