Weddings and registrations move to new home

Selby District Council's Doncaster Road HQ will become the new home of the registration office for births, deaths, civil partnerships and marriages for the town as the service moves out of its old home on Union Lane. The move across town has come about following a new partnership between the County and District.

Both councils are hailing the change as a big improvement and say users of the service will be able to benefit from more room for guests at ceremonies, an on-site café, more parking spaces and improved access.

The move will mean more ceremonies will be able to take place in the town which, it is hoped, will have a knock-on positive benefit for a range of local businesses throughout the area.

Councillor Chris Metcalfe, an Executive Member of both councils said, "The new service will be brighter and better in every way. 

"The new location will be marvellous for weddings and civil partnerships, and all the other users of the Registration Service. The new surroundings will be able to reflect the mood of the occasion whether it be a celebration for the registration of a birth or a more compassionate environment when registering a death."

Also adding her support to the service SDC's Chief Executive and NYCC Assistant Chief Executive, Mary Weastell, "[The partnership] is all about being more efficient with taxpayers' money while ensuring that the high standards of service they have come to expect are maintained and even improved.

"This is an excellent example of how the partnership arrangement between our two authorities is delivering efficiency and better customer service simultaneously."  

Bookings for the new ceremony room will be available shortly and all couples with existing bookings have been offered the chance to move to the new building at no extra cost.
