New primary school for Selby beginning to take shape

Construction work on Selby's new £5.5m primary school is picking up a gear with steel work now already in place.

Staynor Hall Community Primary Academy and nursery will open in September 2016 when it is set to bring an extra 210 school places for children aged 4-11.

York-based Ebor Academy Trust were selected to run the school as part of a national drive for all new schools to become 'academies' or 'free schools'. It will be the first school to open as an academy in the county.

North Yorkshire County Council will meet all costs in setting the new school up, with a contribution towards the build and the provision of the site coming from Staynor Hall developers' Persimmon.

The Staynor Hall development has been steadily increasing in size since it was first approved in 2005. Eventually it will comprise around 1,200 homes with a further 3,000 homes in the pipeline elsewhere in Selby.

Local schools and the community were consulted by the county council in 2013 on the future pattern of educational provision in the town, given rising school numbers and proposed housing development. The preference was for a new school.

Since then the county council has developed proposals for the school buildings and secured planning permission.

Staynor Hall primary represents the biggest single investment in local educational facilities for Selby for many years and we are working closely with our partners, the Ebor Academy Trust, to create a school that will give our children the very best in teaching and learning and high quality facilities.”

Richard Ludlow is director of education with the Ebor Academy Trust, which runs successful primaries across Yorkshire and already works in collaboration with schools in the Selby area. He said: “We are very much looking forward to forging strong community links through Staynor Hall Community Primary Academy. Just as the construction is coming together, we will certainly be growing together for the benefit of parents and children in the area.”
