Sherburn's young people help keep village garden neat and tidy
Community project involved the village's young people, the police and other community groups.

A community project to tidy up a village’s Memorial Garden has been declared a success.
Last month police in Sherburn-in-Elmet teamed up with local young people to revitalise the Finkle Hill site. The local Neighbourhood Policing Team joined forces with Sherburn Youth Council for a ‘day of action’ to tidy up the Memorial Garden, removing litter and planting new shrubs and plants.
Six weeks on, police have to date received no further calls about anti-social behaviour in the area, and the garden remains in good condition with no signs of vandalism.
The tidy-up day, which took place on Wednesday 17 August, was organised by the new Sherburn Neighbourhood Management Group, which involves North Yorkshire Police, North Yorkshire County Council's Prevention Service, Sherburn High School, Selby District Council and Sherburn Parish Council.
The day received excellent community support, with Milford Plants providing tools and plants, and Tesco Sherburn donating drinks and snacks.
PCSO Tim McGreevy, of Selby Rural Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: "The Memorial Garden needed some attention, as it had been identified as a ‘hot spot’ for anti-social behaviour, with litter and damage being a regular occurrence.
"The aim of the day was to highlight the good work done by the Youth Council, and to point out that the majority of the young people in the village are respectful and willing to help their community. It was a fantastic day – and definitely achieved the desired result."
