A busy arterial route through Selby has had to be closed after a water main burst flooding the carriageway.

Police shut the A19 Doncaster Road between Brayton and Selby late last night. The road is closed from the Brayton Lane junction to the junction with Fox Hill Lane.

According to Yorkshire Water around a foot of water hasfound its way onto the road.

Many households are reportedly without water or adequate pressure whilst the utility company make repairs.

A spokeswoman said crews had been deployed to deal with the burst and that a repair would be carried out as soon as possible.

North Yorkshire Police said the road would be closed "for some time" owing to damage caused to the road's surface.
