Sun shines as a thousand cyclists saddle up for Selby Three Swans

The sun was shining as nearly a thousand cyclists saddled up to take part in the third annual Selby Three Swans Sportive on Sunday, September 6.

The event, which saw a record number of entries, was organised by Yorkshire Cancer Research in partnership with Selby Cycling Club, WLCT and Selby District Council.

From beginners to more advanced cyclists, the ride attracted participants with a variety of experience and included a choice of 30 mile, 66 mile and 106 mile routes through the beautiful North Yorkshire countryside.

The day followed hot on the heels of the Tour de Yorkshire, which saw professional cyclists such as Sir Bradley Wiggins set off from Selby Abbey for Stage Two of the event.

Vikki Fillingham, spokesperson for Yorkshire Cancer Research, said: “We had a fantastic turnout. The weather was really kind and there was a real sense of community on the day. It was lovely to see riders of all ages lining up to take part and it’s fabulous that the event attracts so many female cyclists too.

“This is the biggest event the charity has ever held and we’re so grateful to be able to work in partnership with Selby Cycling Club, WLCT and Selby District Council to bring this very unique opportunity to the area. We’re hoping the event will raise vital funds to help more people in Yorkshire avoid, survive and cope with cancer.”

Tim Wheeler, Chairman of Selby Cycling Club, said: “We are amazed at how our Sportive has grown over the last three years. As a club it is so important for us to give something back to the sport, and the sportive does just that.

“Whether it’s the first time back on your bike, or the first time you’ve ridden 100 miles, it’s great that the Sportive encourages people to get on their bike in a safe and supported environment. Thank you to everyone that took part and all the volunteers who helped out.”

Heather Kennedy, Team Leader of WLCT Community Sport and Active Living Team, said: “My team were on the abbey pavement entertaining people with popup sports as they waited for friends and family members to return from their respective rides. We were lucky enough to welcome everyone home as they finished.

“The reaction from everyone was fantastic. There was lots of smiling faces and cheers as people crossed the line despite the long miles cycled. Selby town centre was definitely shining in the sunshine on Sunday. It is always a brilliant day out. Thanks to everyone who supported the event.”

Cllr David Peart, Selby District Council Lead Councillor for Housing, Leisure, Health and Culture, said: “It is great to see the Tour de Yorkshire cycling legacy in action in Selby, with a record number of participants taking part in this year’s sportive. It’s fantastic that so many people within the Selby district are supporting cycling.”
