A man has died after he was hit by a car as he crossed the A64 at Bilbrough.

The pedestrian, a 51-year-old local man, was hit by a silver Hyundai i10 on the eastbound carriageway at around 10:30 pm last night. He was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.

The road was closed for most of the night to allow officers from the forces traffic investigations team to eximine the scene. The road was later reopened at around 4:30 am this morning.

Police have since appealed for anyone who may have witnessed the incident to get in touch with them.

The victim, who has not yet been named, has become the latest in a string of fatalities that have occurred on the dangerous stretch of road in recent years.
