Lightning strike could have started Shipyard blaze

A lightning strike could have been to blame for a large fire that destroyed a building on the former Selby Shipyard this weekend.

Lightning strike could have started Shipyard blaze

Fire crews rushed to the Shipyard Industrial Estate just after 3 o'clock in the early hours of Sunday morning after the alarm was raised by local residents. On arrival firefighters found a large single storey building was well alight.

Both crews from Selby battled the flames for several hours before the fire was finally extinguished around breakfast time on Sunday.

Whilst still unconfirmed, its understood that one line of investigation into the cause of the blaze is that the building may have been struck by lightning during a summer storm raging through the area at that time.
