Council stickers to target district flytippers

Selby District Council is introducing new ‘council aware’ and witness appeal stickers to be used on illegally dumped rubbish.

The introduction of the stickers will reduce repeat reporting of fly tipping incidents and let members of the public know Selby District Council is aware of the incident. Additional stickers will appeal for witnesses if we need more information about the crime.

Fly tipping is the current focus of the 12-month Don’t be a Waster – Reduce, Reuse, Respect campaign. The council has already announced that it is working with a community arts group to produce art work installations to deter fly tippers at hotspots in the district.

Cllr Richard Musgrave, a member of the council's executive committee, commented, ”Using these stickers mean we can share information with residents who may not know the waste has already been reported.

“And the witness appeal stickers may remind someone that they have important evidence we can then use to catch and prosecute the criminals who persist in irresponsibly and illegally using our district as their personal rubbish bin.

“Residents are part of the solution to help us tackle this issue. Working with us they can help us fight the fly tippers. Fly tippers who choose to ignore the rules that the rest of us abide by will pay the price for their anti-social, criminal behaviour – we will see them in court.”

Dumping waste is a criminal offence with a fine of up £50,000 at a magistrates court or an unlimited fine and a possible prison sentence of up to five years at crown court.
