No more chicken? New plans submitted for Bawtry Road development

Revamped plans to bring a new shopping development to the edge of town have been lodged with council planners following earlier set backs.

German grocery discounters Lidl and pub chain Marston's are planning to open outlets on land at Selby's southernmost gateway – sandwiched between the growing Staynor Hall estate and the bypass – should the plans get the green light.

It is the second time this year that the site has been in the spotlight. An earlier application, lodged in April, disappeared from the planning register after Selby District Council accepted it would not be able to make a decision on the application after failing to check the application was properly valid.

That initial scheme, in addition to the supermarket and public house, also featured plans for a 76-cover fast food restaurant and drive-thru that would become home to KFC. No such outlet is visible on the latest drawing however, prompting fears that fried chicken fans could be left disappointed – and hungry.

The Selebian contacted both the developer and KFC to clarify the matter. Neither had been in touch by the time of publication.

The land was set aside for commercial development in 2005 when it formed part of the overall 1200-home Staynor Hall project. That original 'outline' permission is now understood to have expired meaning full planning applications are now required in respect of any future use.

The latest application primarily concerns the proposed new supermarket but also includes details of how vehicles will access the centre from Bawtry Road. This is already proving controversial with some local residents who have questioned whether it would be safe for that stretch of road to handle any more traffic.

Anybody wishing to support or object to the application should write to the council by December 17th. The application is not expected to be determined before January 2016.
