Speed cam vans to double in police plan for safer roads
The number of Police speed camera vans in operation is set to double as the force attempts to improve road safety in North Yorkshire.

North Yorkshire Police's Executive Board has given the green light to a new package of measures designed to bring down the number of people injured or killed on the county's roads.
Measures are set in include a community 'speed watch' scheme, enhanced training and education for road users, and improve back office support for dealing with road safety offences.
Controversially the force also agreed to purchase three new mobile speed camera vans, doubling the number previously in use. The force cited research showing fewer enforcement resources in North Yorkshire when compared with other similar-sized forces as reasoning behind the purchase.
Behind the scheme, the Police Commissioner for North Yorkshire, Julia Mulligan, said, "Together with the Chief Constable, I am absolutely committed to improving road safety in our region, and I hope that the activities we have announced today will make a significant contribution to reducing fatalities, injuries and anti-social behaviour on our roads.”
The new speed camera vans are expected to come into service from spring 2015. The force says they will be used to tackle a whole range of anti-social road use, including speeding, dangerous behaviour and use of mobile phones whilst driving.
