Selby Olympic torch route revealed

The torch will enter the Selby District en route to York on the morning of Tuesday June 19th.

It's first stop in the area will be at 09:00 am, when a torch relay will take place in the village of Camblesforth.

The relay will begin at the roundabout at Drax Lane where three torch bearers will carry the flame up the A1041 towards the Black Dog Inn where the torch will then be transported to Selby.

The second leg of the district's relay will take place from 09:16 when the torch arrives in Selby where the junction of the Three Lakes Centre on Bawtry Road will be the venue for the start.

Nine torch bearers will be responsible for escorting the torch through Selby. They will carry the flame down Park Street towards Selby Abbey, where the relay will make a left turn onto The Crescent and into The Market Place.

The torch will then travel up Gowthorpe, where it will make a slight detour, entering the grounds of Selby High School.

From there the relay will head up Leeds Road, where the Selby leg will draw to a close near the junction with Sandhill Lane.

Of the nine people carrying the torch through the streets of Selby, only three appear to be from the local area, with 11 year old Rachel Keil-Isaac being the youngest.

A further six torch bearers meanwhile hail from locations as diverse as York, Cambridgeshire and Rabieh - a suburb of Beirut, Lebanon.

Following the Selby relay, the torch will drive through Thorpe Willoughby and Hambleton as it makes it's way to it's next outing in Monk Fryston.

Arriving in Monk Fryston at 10:18, a further four torch bearers will have the duty of carrying the flame through the village towards it's end point at the A63/A162 roundabout.

The route will then follow the A164, bypassing South Milford and Sherburn in Elmet - a decision which has lead to much anger in Sherburn, as reported by Selby Online in January.

Residents from Sherburn have been campaigning, putting together a 3,000 signature petition, calling on organisers to altar the route since it was announced that the town would miss out. Last week it was announced that they had persuaded the district council to agree to lobby LOCOG for a change of route.

The fourth stop in the Selby District, will be at Barkston Ash. The torch will arrive at 10:39 where it will be carried by two people before continuing it's journey towards Tadcaster.

Arriving in (West) Tadcaster at 10:54, two torch bearers will escort the torch as it is carried through Chapel Street and Station Road ending in Wetherby Road.
