School pupils bury time capsule at new leisure centre

Joining officials from Selby Council and contractors, Wates Construction, the pupils of Selby Community Primary donned hard hats as they place school uniform examples and letters of future aspirations into the capsule and buried it to provide future generations with an insight into our town as it is today.

The ceremony, which took place on November 17th, also provided school staff and students with an opportunity to see the progress being made on the new leisure centre as it progresses towards its January opening date.

Construction on the multimillion pound Scott Road facility began in February and when fully built, will contain a six-lane 25m competition swimming pool with learner pool, a studio gym, sauna and steam rooms and an outdoor all-weather sports pitch.

Phil Harrison, Managing Director, Wates Construction North, commented: “Years from now, this time capsule will provide a glimpse into life in Selby in 2014 and it’s been a pleasure to watch the children from Selby Community Primary School create this small piece of history in the grounds of their new Leisure Centre. Work is continuing apace as we work towards its on time, on budget completion in the new year.”

Leader of the Council, Councillor Mark Crane added: “The time capsule will create a very special legacy because it means that these young, future leisure centre users will have a unique connection to Selby Leisure Centre for the rest of their lives.”

Ian Clennan, Headteacher, Selby Community Primary School, said: “Selby Community Primary School are proud to have been involved during the building of the new leisure centre. Being able to make regular visits, see the plans and watch the construction process from our school has been an amazing process for our children. The burial of the time capsule has made the children think of what items would be useful to read and see when the capsule is opened in future years.”
