A woman who fraudulently claimed more than £35,000 in benefits has been sentenced at York Crown Court.

Community service for £35k benefit fraudster

Vicki Playle, 32, of Cathcart Close, Whitley, this week received a 22 week suspended sentence, 80 hours community service and a six month supervision order after she pleaded guilty to the fraud earlier in the year.

Playle admitted making false statements to Selby District Council and to the Department for work and Pensions going back to January 2007 by failing to declare that she was living in a common household with Jonathan Playle and obtaining benefits unlawfully.

A joint investigation by the Council and the Department for Work and Pensions uncovered that she had received Housing Benefit overpayments of £22,565.59 along side Income Support overpayments worth £8,183.42 and Council Tax relief overpayments totalling £5,104.90.

These overpayments are being recovered by the respective organisations directly from Mrs Playle.
