Thousands descend on city as Leeds Festival plays host to Libertines, Metallica, Mumfords and more

Leeds' population will swell by an estimated 80,000 this weekend as music fans from far and wide descend on the fields of Bramham Park for the north's most anticipated annual music festival.

The 2015 Leeds Festival gets underway today with some of the hottest properties from the world of rock and alternative music making a beeline for the hallowed stages of Bramham.

Indie legends Pete Doherty and Carl Barât's The Libertines are set to headline the Main Stage tonight as they embark on a series of gigs and events in the run up to the release their first album in a decade.

Saturday sees folk-rock supremos Mumford and Sons go up against Nu Metalers Limp Bizkit in a battle of the headliners on the Main and NME stages respectively.

Rounding the weekend off, festival favourites Metallica will dominate the day's Main Stage proceedings on Sunday with their first trip back to the festival since they last set foot on Bramham's Main Stage in 2008.

Other notable highlights from the weekend's music include Alt-J, All Time Low, Deadmou5, Frank Turner, Twin Atlantic and one of 2015's biggest rising stars, Years & Years.

Meanwhile, flying the flag for Yorkshire will be Calls Landing (Lock-Up Stage, 12:00) and Wakefield stars, The Cribs.

Comedy highlights on offer on the Alternative Stage include Holly Walsh, Sean Walsh, Milton Jones, and the seriously funny Reginald D Hunter.

Festival goers will be hoping for sunshine and peaceful skies above Leeds for the duration of the bank holiday weekend as they look to make the most of their tented city. Forecasters may have other ideas however, with showers adding to the likelihood of potentially muddy times on Saturday and Sunday.
