District recycling figures on the up

Residents in the Selby district are being praised for their support for recycling services.

Across the district residents recycle their plastic, can, glass and paper and card waste every fortnight. And the figures from January - which is when we see the biggest increase in recycling - show just how well residents have done.

  • In January 2013, Amey Plc, on behalf of Selby District Council, collected:
    32% more paper than the average for the year
  • 34% more glass than the average for the year
  • 26% more cans than the average for the year
  • 20% more plastic than the average for the year
    In total that's 31% more than the average recycling collected.

Deputy leader of the council, Cllr Gillian Ivey, said, "These figures show just how much recycling has, for many of us, become automatic. We can recycle about three quarters of all our household waste - and we wash, squash and put our recycling out every fortnight.

"When Christmas rolls around and we all have the extra plastic, glass, cans and paper that is generated at this time of year, we recycle all that too.

"I'd really like to see the figures for next January to show that we've recycled even more - so let's see if we can beat our own target and recycle as much as we can."
