Eyesore petrol station to become War Memorial rose garden in Hemingbrough
An derelict former petrol station in Hemingbrough is set to be transformed into a memorial garden, thanks to a local heritage group.

The Parish of Hemingbrough Historic and Heritage Society purchased the former Hearthstone Filling Station on Hull Road at the beginning of the month.
It now intends to demolish village eyesore and will create a Memorial Garden to commemorate the Centenary of the First World War in its place. The garden will also to remember those, from the village and surrounding area, who fell in other conflicts.
The group says it has the support of more than 450 residents of the village who put their signatures to a survey of support commissioned by the group. It says it intends to continue to consult with villagers as the scheme progresses.
It is keen to stress that progress that has been made so far has been made without the help of Hemingbrough Parish Council and the local Parochial Church – both of whom declined to support the group’s earlier bid to erect a cenotaph style memorial at St Mary’s Church.
News of the planned garden will come as a great boost to many residents who expressed deep concern over the festering state of the filling station. Preliminary work has now commenced ahead of full demolition work on the structure of the filling station and clearing the site.
