Sandbags brought in as Cawood river levels rise

schedule
Ouse rises in Cawood
Selby DC

Flood defences in Cawood are being strengthened this evening as water levels continue to rise River Ouse.

The Environment Agency, North Yorkshire County Council and Selby District Council are working together to increase the height of defences as a precaution.

North Yorkshire Police is also setting up a community support station in the car park of the Jolly Sailor pub in the village to help anyone concerned about possible flooding.

The work is being coordinated by the North Yorkshire Local Resilience Forum, which brings together lots of different organisations that support flood protection and relief work.

Chair of the North Yorkshire Local Resilience Forum and Chief Executive of North Yorkshire County Council, Richard Flinton, explained, “This is just an added precaution at this stage, as we expect water levels to remain below the height of flood defences.  However, it’s important that we’re prepared and help to protect homes and businesses.

“Lots of different organisations are working together on this to make sure we can focus our efforts on supporting those most in need.

“We know that many parts of North Yorkshire are affected – particularly in the Selby district – and we’re continuing to monitor river levels across the county.”

People are reminded not to walk or drive through flood water because of unseen hazards such as loose drain covers.  Flood water can also be contaminated.  People are also advised to consider other road users and drive slowly on roads that remain open but where there is standing water on the carriageway.

If anyone is directly affected by flooding and needs urgent help, they should contact North Yorkshire Police in the first instance on 101.  For emergencies, please call 999.  Selby District Council and the Environment Agency are coordinating deliveries of sandbags, in partnership with North Yorkshire County Council.

A full list of road closures across the Selby district can be found on North Yorkshire County Council’s website: www.northyorks.gov.uk.  A full list of current flood warnings can be found on the gov.uk website.
